My Love/Hate Relationship with Instagram Organizing
Since the Marie Kondo craze earlier this year, decluttering and working with a professional organizer is ALL THE RAGE. The good news? People are realizing the benefit of what I have known forever - that your environment absolutely has an impact on your happiness and well-being, and by making a concerted effort to be intentional with your belongings and create a home that makes you happy, you will move closer to a life you love.
The bad news? Instagram in particular is full of color-sorted closets, rainbow colors, decanted grains and cereals and bright white backgrounds of beautiful organized spaces. Now, I love looking at these pictures just as much as the next gal - perhaps more - but I'm not sure it's healthy or realistic. Just as the barrage of swimsuit models paints a picture that everyone should look like them or you aren't good enough, these perfect closets and homes make your own home feel pretty inferior in comparison.
Listen - your closet doesn't have to be a California Closet to be organized. Your pantry can still contain everything IN IT'S ORIGINAL PACKAGING (gasp!) and still be tidy. Your home can be small and old but still make you happy. And you can hire a professional organizer and get results you are thrilled about - even if it's not Instagram or Pinterest perfect.
Social media is a great benefit for so many things, but creating a healthy sense of reality is NOT one of them. Here's to reasonable expectations for others and especially for ourselves!
