Well, I Didn’t See That Coming…
A couple of weeks ago, I was planning my latest blog post, knowing that I had put it off long enough and really needed to address spring cleaning/organizing/etc. Then Corona happened and now we are in a pandemic with no end in sight. Whoa.
Whether you're home doing the WFH/parenting combo platter or suddenly find yourself out of work and looking for productive ways to use your time, I'd like to offer up some ideas for mini-projects you can take on to give yourself a sense of accomplishment. I know I always feel better when I feel like I checked something off of my list.
1. Tackle the space that stresses you out most. For a lot of people, that's drop zones like the kitchen or entry. Organize and toss old mail. Put things away. Make clear spaces your goal.
2. If you have kids - sort through their clothes and set aside anything that doesn't fit anymore. As you go through clothing for the spring season, take note of the holes in their wardrobe you have to fill so you're not shopping without a road-map. Kid's clothes are expensive! Store only current clothing in their closet/dresser so if they pick out their own clothes you know it's something acceptable for the season.
3. Go through your clothes and set aside anything that doesn't fit or isn't seasonally appropriate. Take note of what you need to complete your spring wardrobe as well.
4. Go through your junk drawer and purge the crap you don't need or use. For extra credit, see my post on junk drawers and get an organizer for your junk drawer and use it!
5. Clean out your pantry and sort things by type. Add bins for containment and to help you and your family know where things go.
6. Create a list of easy meals that your whole family enjoys, especially those that need few ingredients that you usually keep on hand. Store the list as a note on your iPhone or on your fridge and use it when you meal plan.
7. Go through your phone and clean out pictures, contacts and your social media accounts. Unfollow accounts that don't add to your happiness. Organize your apps by type (Social Media/Productivity/Finances etc).
8. Clean out your fridge. Organize your condiments by type. Take a picture and text it to me for my own enjoyment. :)
9. Go through kid's toys and donate what isn't being used. Remember, kids don't need ALL of their toys to be accessible at all times to be entertained. In fact, studies show that kids with fewer toys play with them more and that having too many options can be paralyzing. Keep in mind, most donation centers are closed for the foreseeable future, so set aside a place to keep your donations until they open so your kids don't just reintegrate what you intend to donate!
